English language schools in the UK

A language school in the UK teaches English at general or academic level. Where the course is studied on a Student visa, enrolment must be with a provider holding a Home Office sponsor licence rather than with any school.

An English course is often the first step rather than the destination, and which visa it is studied on decides what can follow it. The academic route afterwards is at UK education guidance.

01

What is a language school in the UK?

A language school is a provider teaching English at general, academic or exam-preparation level. Some of these providers hold a Home Office sponsor licence and some do not, and only the licensed ones can support a Student visa.

The register of licensed student sponsors is published, so whether a particular school can sponsor is a matter of record rather than of what the school says about itself.

02

Which visa rules apply to studying at a language school?

Türkiye appears on the UK immigration rules' visa national list, so Turkish citizens obtain a visa before travelling. A course studied on a Student visa requires a CAS from a licensed sponsor rather than an enrolment letter alone.

03

What English level is required to apply?

The English threshold published for a Student visa depends on the level of the course the school's programme sits at: CEFR B1 below degree level and CEFR B2 at degree level and above. The school's own entry test is separate.

A school will place a student by its own assessment, but that placement does not replace the visa threshold, which is measured on an approved test.

04

What does a language course in the UK cost?

Each language school sets and publishes its own course fee, and no single national figure exists. On the official side the amounts are fixed: the visa fee and the maintenance figure are published by the Home Office.

That split is worth keeping in mind when budgeting: one half of the cost is negotiable between schools and the other half is not negotiable at all.

05

Is it possible to move to university afterwards?

Academic English courses are studied to reach the CEFR B2 threshold published for degree-level programmes. Higher education institutions set their own entry requirements for undergraduate study alongside that, and each publishes them on its programme pages.

Reaching the visa threshold and meeting a university's own English requirement are two separate tests, and the university's is frequently the higher of the two.
