Universities in the UK are higher education institutions with recognised degree-awarding powers. There is no single published count of them; the register that exists is the Home Office list of licensed student sponsors, which records who can sponsor a visa.

How many universities are there in the UK?
There is no single official figure published centrally for the number of universities in the UK. The register that does exist is the Home Office list of licensed student sponsors, which records institutions permitted to sponsor a Student visa.
Any figure quoted as a total is therefore someone's count of a particular category rather than an official number. The register is the document to read where the question is whether a specific institution can sponsor a visa.

What separates a university from a college in the UK?
The Home Office register divides institutions into six types, and higher education institution is only one of them. The remainder include further education colleges, independent schools and private providers, each offering a different kind of provision.

How is a UK university's recognition checked?
GOV.UK names a separate register for each of the four countries: the Office for Students register in England, and the equivalent bodies in Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales. Recognition is checked there rather than on a ranking.
A ranking measures reputation; a register settles whether a degree is a recognised degree at all. The two questions are different, and only the second one has a definite answer.

How are applications to UK universities made?
Undergraduate applications go centrally through UCAS with up to five programme choices. Master's and doctoral applications are made separately through each university's own online portal, so no single central form exists at postgraduate level in the UK.
The equal consideration deadline for 2027 entry is 13 January 2027 for undergraduate applications. Postgraduate deadlines are set programme by programme and vary widely.

What do UK universities charge in tuition fees?
There is no single published figure for international tuition: each university sets its own amount and publishes it on the programme page. The central cap that exists applies to home students within the England student finance system.
That is why a comparison of institutions has to be made programme by programme rather than from a national average. The individual institution pages on this site each carry that university's own fee source.
