One record matters more than any ranking when reading a university page: the Home Office register of student sponsors, which is what permits an institution to issue the CAS a student visa requires. University of Lancashire appears on it, and on the register that carries degree-awarding powers; this page sets out the institution’s subjects, entry requirements, fee arrangements and application steps.
01
What kind of university is Lancashire?
The University of Lancashire traces back to an institution founded in Preston in 1828 and teaches today on a single campus in the town centre. It was long known as the University of Central Lancashire and the abbreviation UCLan is still recognised.
The institution's name changed recently from the University of Central Lancashire to the University of Lancashire, and the UCLan abbreviation is still in common use. Older sources therefore carry both names, which is worth knowing when searching.
Degree-awarding powers sit on the Office for Students register; the authority to issue the CAS a student visa requires sits on the Home Office register of licensed sponsors. The two registers are kept separately and both are recorded in the institution's own name.
02
Which subjects stand out at Lancashire?
Journalism is among the best known fields here and runs with the institution's own newsroom infrastructure. Alongside it forensic science, dentistry, nursing, engineering and business carry long course lists at undergraduate and postgraduate level and fill out the catalogue.
- Media and Arts: journalism, film, music, game design, fashion.
- Health: dentistry, nursing, midwifery, pharmacy, physiotherapy.
- Science and Engineering: forensic science, astrophysics, mechanical, civil engineering.
- Business and Law: business, accounting, law, criminology, policing studies.
Forensic science programmes run with the institution's laboratory facilities and carry a practical teaching load. Dentistry is one of a small number of programmes of its kind in the north-west of England.
03
What are the entry requirements at Lancashire?
The institution publishes no single Turkey-wide grade threshold; the qualifications accepted and the mark required are stated in the entry requirements section of each course page. A Turkish high school diploma is not sufficient on its own.
| Level | What is published |
|---|---|
| Undergraduate — with a school diploma | A-level, IB or another accepted equivalent qualification |
| Postgraduate | The grade required is published on each course page |
| English language | Published separately, course by course |
For an applicant holding a Turkish high school diploma the route is an accepted qualification such as A-level or the IB, or one of the foundation programmes. The English level a course asks for is published on the same page.
04
What are tuition fees at Lancashire?
The international fee varies by course and each course publishes the figure on its own page. The institution runs scholarships at undergraduate and postgraduate level; conditions and deadlines are listed on its funding pages by year of entry and by course.
Alongside tuition, living cost is the second large item. The maintenance funds a student visa asks you to show are set by region and come to £1,171 a month here; in London the same line is £1,529.
Postgraduate scholarships also run at department level and their deadlines close before the course's own. The UK scholarships page sets out the arrangement in general terms.

05
What is the campus and student life like in Preston?
The campus is gathered into a single area in central Preston; the library, a sports centre and the students' building share the site. The town centre and the railway station are reached on foot, which keeps daily travel costs down to very little.
Preston is the administrative centre of Lancashire and both Manchester and Liverpool are under an hour away by train. The cost of living sits below both of those cities and the rent difference shows clearly in a budget.
Accommodation is mostly in university halls in the first year; later on students move into rented housing around the campus. The Lake District is an hour to the north.
