The University of Southampton traces back to the Hartley Institution founded in 1862 and took university status in 1952. It is a member of the Russell Group; its main site is at Highfield in the north of the city and it teaches across several campuses.
Rather than pressing into one site, the institution works across several campuses divided by function: Highfield is the academic centre, the Avenue campus holds the humanities, the Winchester School of Art holds the art programmes and the National Oceanography Centre holds ocean science.
Degree-awarding powers sit on the Office for Students register; the authority to issue the CAS a student visa requires sits on the Home Office register of licensed sponsors. The two registers are kept separately and both are recorded in the institution's own name.

Which subjects stand out at Southampton?
Engineering is the widest field here; electronics and computer science, sound and vibration research and ocean science are the particularly well known titles. Medicine, law, business and the art programmes run through the Winchester School of Art fill out the catalogue.

The English language requirement is published separately on the course page. For an applicant holding a school diploma the usual route is an accepted qualification such as A-level or the IB, or one of the foundation programmes.

What are tuition fees at Southampton?
The international fee varies by course and each course publishes the figure on its own page. The institution runs scholarships at undergraduate and postgraduate level; conditions and deadlines are listed on its funding pages by year of entry and by course.
Alongside tuition, living cost is the second large item. The maintenance funds a student visa asks you to show are set by region and come to £1,171 a month here; in London the same line is £1,529.

What is the campus and student life like in Southampton?
The main Highfield site sits in the north of the city, connected to the centre by bus. The institution also runs units at the Winchester School of Art and at the National Oceanography Centre by the docks; a free shuttle runs between all the sites.
The city sits on the south coast of England and is about an hour and a half from London by train. The airport lies within the city boundary and European connections run from there.
Accommodation is mostly in university halls in the first year; later on students move into rented housing around Portswood and Highfield. The shuttle between the sites is free to students.

Undergraduate applications go through UCAS; the deadline for 2027 entry is 13 January 2027, moving to 15 October 2026 for medicine. Postgraduate and doctoral applications are sent directly to the course through the institution's own online portal.
